Water Filtration Systems

This article offers brief definitions of various water filtration systems. For the best results consider the following information alongside personal needs, warranties and price tags.

Faucet Filters

These popular filters are placed over the mouth of a standard faucet to filter out lead, chlorine, mercury, giardia, and cryptosporidium among other chemicals and bacteria. Installation is easy and price is reasonable. Faucet filters require filter change periodically; some units notify owners of a needed filter change with a helpful indicator. A well-working unit can filter as much as 100 gallons of water.

Pitcher Filters

These two-chamber filters look similar to traditional filters. Tap water is poured into the top chamber to be filtered. This water slowly trickles down into the pitcher. Pitcher filters are cost effective and come in a number of shapes and sizes. Remember to change filters every three months, and wash the pitcher frequently to prevent scum and mildew buildup.

Refrigerator Filters

Refrigerator filters are attached to the water processing unit in your refrigerator. These filters offer safe and cold water. Fridge filters come standard in many refrigerators offered by the following companies: GE, Maytag, Kenmore, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Samsung, and Whirlpool. Refrigerators without filters might also be able to have a filter installed.

Countertop Filters

Famous in apartments and cottages are countertop filtration systems. These filters are portable, easy to use, and can use reverse osmosis to filter out a great number of chemicals and harmful bacteria. Countertop filters have unique added capabilities because they depend on multiple tanks. These units offer about 90 gallons of water per day.

Whole House Filtration Systems

If occupants have extreme sensitivity to water chemistry or the water is highly polluted, consider a whole house filtration system. These costly units filter all of the water in the house (including shower water) from one point. The technology in these systems is varied and vast. Whole house systems can contain additional filter cartridges for lead, sulfur, chlorine, dissolved iron, hydrogen sulfide, and heavy metals. House systems are most efficient at killing bacteria if they employ large reservoir tanks or UV lamp technology.

Camping/Portable Filters

Travelers and campers can benefit from carrying along these tiny (as small as pocket-sized) and invaluable devices. These portable and convenient systems can remove bacteria, viruses, and pollutants 0.2 micron or larger. These filters have worked wonders in emergencies and in remote locations. Choose these units first and foremost based on reliability and durability. Systems with poor flow rates and stiff pumps will make filtration difficult.
