When downloading image files from a digital camera or the Internet, they usually appear with a numeric name, such as “IMG_166746.JPG”. Renaming the image to something more familiar will be more convenient for when trying to locate it especially when sending it to someone. Renaming an image file is easy and only takes several steps to rename multiple images at the same time.
Instructions:
- Click on the “Start” button and select “My Computer” (“Computer” in Windows Vista® and Windows® 7).
- Locate the folder that contains the image files you would like to rename.
- While holding down the “Ctrl” key on your keyboard, click on every image file you would like to rename.
- Right-click on the selection and click “Rename” or press the “F2” key.
- Type in the new name. With MS Windows® XP, you will have to type the file extension as well (e.g., “Summer_Vacation_2011.JPG”) and then press the “Enter” key.
- All the selected image files are renamed with the same filename along with a sequential number after it.
Tips and Tricks:
- If you would like to return to the previous filename while you are still editing it, just press the “ESC” key
Warnings:
- Be sure you don’t have any of the files opened during this process, because you will receive an error message.
