How Do I Choose the Best Tablet for Me

June 07, 2013

general features offered by tablets

Tablets have become very popular and, just like smartphones, they’ve become part of our daily lives. There are hundreds of models in various sizes, operating systems, parameters and prices. This article discusses the general features offered by tablets so you can get a better understanding of what you might want when choosing one.

Key features:

Display size or tablet size:

  1. 7’’ tablets – These are the smallest tablets on the market. Ideal as a “larger” smartphone substitution, the 7” tablets are generally purchased for home use, such as playing games, listening to music and viewing photos.
  2. 8’’ tablets – Similar to the 7’’, these tablets are great for the exact same uses as well as for reading ebooks and more comfortable Internet browsing.
  3. 10’’ tablets – Very often used for business, the 10” tablets can comfortably substitute for laptops and easily handle all activities users expect from those types of mobile devices.

Display resolution:

  1. 800 x 600 – Typical for smaller tablets, this resolution is truly unacceptable and isn’t recommended for any tablet, even 7’’ ones.
  2. 1024 x 600(1024 x 768) – For 7’’ and 8’’ tablets, this is ideal for all activities except photos and higher resolution images, which are better served with an upgraded display.  Some low-end 10” tablets may offer resolutions at this level, but it is worth paying a bit more for a better display resolution when buying a larger sized tablet.
  3. 1280 x 800The average 10’’ tablets typically offer this resolution. It is sufficient for most of the activities you will want to do with this tablet.
  4. 1920 x 1200 – High-end 10’’ tablets are available with this resolution. If you want the best, choose this resolution for your tablet. You won’t regret it!

Note: If you are choosing an ideal resolution for your tablet, always consider the size of the screen. The larger the screen, the larger the display resolution should have.

Operating system:

  1. Android™ - This operating system from Google® is installed in tablets from all segments of the market. Since it is an “open” operating system, it is the only one available for the low-end. It is ideal for people who want to have unlimited activities and free applications for their tablet. On the other hand, it is the most vulnerable system for Internet threats.
  2. iOS® -  This operating system created by Apple® is probably the most stable. It is only available in Apple® tablets, which belong to the high-end and most expensive segment of the market. The popular iPad® tablet gets all its apps, music and files from iCloud®, iTunes® and the App Store℠.
  3. Windows® 8 – It is difficult to compare this operating system from Microsoft® with the two mentioned above primarily because of its powerful hardware. Tablets using Windows® 8 are almost like laptops or mini notebooks and their price is high.

Other important parameters:

  1. Thickness and weight – If you have a choice, grab the thinnest and lightest tablet. Try to choose a tablet that is less than 10mm thick. You will appreciate this when you’re carrying it around with you.
  2. Processor – Android™-based tablets should have at least a 1.2Ghz processor with two cores for it to run smoothly. For Apple® tablets, be sure they’ve been tested on the current version of the operating system. And, as always, faster is better.
  3. RAM – It is recommended for Android™ to have at least 1GB, while Apple® needs only 512MB.
  4. Communication Wi-Fi is a must. Look for Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/draft n. Without an Internet connection, tablets are basically useless. Bluetooth® and 3G modems are very handy features as well.
  5. Multimedia – Think about the sensors you want your tablet to have. Recommendations include front and rear cameras as well as stereo speakers and GPS.
  6. Battery – With batteries, it is simple - the larger, the better.

All this information should help you choose your ideal tablet. Remember, technologies evolve quite quickly. If you invest in the most expensive model, don’t expect it to still be high-end in a few years. Just assess your needs, choose what will work best for you and enjoy!
