There are many public places where you can connect to a wireless network. It is quite common for people to carry notebooks and cell phones throughout the day for work or study. For these users Wi-Fi may be very helpful, it allows them to connect to the Internet during lunch, meetings, or a break in the park. You can learn how to connect to an available wireless network using the default Windows® tool by reading the instructions below.
Instructions:
- First, you have to have your Wi-Fi adapter turned on. Typically, there is a button with a light indicator. If you cannot locate it, use your user manual.
- If you have successfully turned your adapter on, the wireless icon will display in the system tray (bottom-right corner of the desktop, near the clock).
- Right-click on the icon representing the wireless network controller and choose the “View Available Wireless Networks” option.
- In a few seconds, the list of available networks will display. Double-click on the network you want to connect to, or select it and click on the “Connect” button.

- In the “Wireless Network Connection” section, double-click on the network you want to connect to, or select it and click on the “Connect” button.
Tips and tricks:
- If the network is protected by a security key, ask the provider for the password. It is very common for hotel, pub, or restaurant owners to give the key to their patrons, or inform them of how to purchase access.

- Before you connect to any public wireless network please be sure you have your security software (antivirus, firewall) enabled.
