How Do I Copy a DVD Movie

December 06, 2011  |  Difficulty: Hard

how to copy a DVD using DVD Shrink® application

For various reasons, you may need another copy of your DVD movie. This can be accomplished with the DVD Shrink® program. This program is free, and the interface is very simple. Copying a DVD movie is more complicated than copying a normal CD/DVD containing programs or songs. In fact, movie DVDs are usually copy-protected on a computer. The second major problem is that some DVDs are pressed to a higher capacity than the standard DVDs you buy at the store. While the standard blank media has a 4314 megabyte capacity, with original DVD movies, that number can be doubled. One possibility is for you to use a double layered media, but this costs much more and you will need to have a double layered DVD drive.

The DVD Shrink® application allows you to cut off some parts of the DVD, such as additional audio tracks, menus and subtitles, and lower the quality of the video. By removing these items and reducing the quality of the video, you can reach the size of an ordinary DVD medium. Follow the instructions below to learn how to shrink and burn a DVD movie.

  1. First, download and install the DVD Shrink® application. Since it is quite complicated to download the installation file from the DVD Shrink® home page, it is recommended that you download it from any global software page, for example, the Softpedia® site.
  2. Open the downloaded file and run the installation wizard. To install the application, follow the wizard through completion, then click on the “Finish” button.
  3. Launch the application and insert the original media into the optical drive. Click on the “Open disk” button on the main navigation bar. In the confirmation dialog box, choose the DVD drive and click on the “OK” button.
  4. Click on the “Analysis” button to start receiving information about the media.
  5. Now you will be in the main window of the application. In the left pane, you will see a tree view of all the segments of the media. You should select the segments one by one, and in the right part of the window you can disable the features as you wish.
  6. At the top of the window, you can see the scale and space needed for the copy. If you have not reached the required size by disabling features, you must to compress the video.
  7. Choose “Main Movie” and in the “Compression Settings” selection, choose “Custom Ratio” from the video dropdown. Use the slider to find the optimal compression.
  8. Click on the “Backup” button on the main navigation bar.
  9. In the “Backup DVD” area of the “Select Backup Target” section, choose to save the copied DVD to the hard disk, create an ISO or burn the media.
  10. Click on the “OK” button and watch your new DVD backup!

Tips and Tricks:

  • You cannot copy dialog, so be ready to burn with the support of the Nero® Burning Rom program which must be installed separately. If you leave the DVD Shrink® application, store the DVD in a folder on your disk. You can then use any burning program to burn the movie from this folder. Examples of free burning programs include the CDBurnerXP© or Deep Burner© applications.

  • If you copy a DVD that you have purchased, keep in mind that you may commit copyright infringement. Not every DVD can be copied legally, even though you may have a copy only for your personal or family use.
