How Do I Create a Desktop Slideshow in Windows® 7

How to simply make a slideshow of a selection of images

Microsoft Windows® 7 lets you make your desktop wallpaper a variable background through its theme function. Every user has his own color preference for his background. Some prefer bright colors, for others, darker ones. Likewise, someone may prefer the variable option for a constantly changing background. Many like to have family photos, sport wallpapers, celebrity photos, or abstract themes. If you are indecisive, simply make a slideshow of a selection of images that will automatically change your desktop at a defined interval. Here is a short tutorial on how to do this.

  1. First you need to create a folder with images or photos you want to display on your desktop. Create a folder and copy images into it.
  2. You need to be at your current desktop. Minimize all applications or show your desktop by pressing “Win Key + D” on your keyboard.
  3. Right–click on your desktop.
  4. Choose “Personalize” and click on the “Desktop Background” link.
  5. Click the “Browse” button, choose the folder you created in Step 1 and click the “OK” button.
  6. Images from the folder will display with a small tick mark in the upper left corner.
  7. Set the timing for the images in the “Change picture every” dropdown menu.
  8. Click “Save changes” and the new unsaved theme will be created in the “My Themes” group.
  9. Right-click on the theme, choose “Save theme” and enter the name, then click the “Save” button.
  10. Close the “Personalization” window.

Tips and tricks:

  • If you want to customize the position of the images displayed on your desktop, choose a different parameter in the “Picture position” dropdown menu.
  • To delete a saved theme, right-click on any saved theme and then choose the “Delete theme” option.
