How Do I Create My Own “WinKey” Shortcuts in Windows®

Almost everyone occasionally uses some of the shortcuts that Windows® offers, through the combination of a “WinKey + another key.” However, what if someone wants to create his own keyboard shortcut, for example one made for running an application? A simple program, WinKey, works without problems in all versions of Windows®, including the latest Windows® 7. The application can be downloaded from free servers, e.g. from Softpedia. The installation is simple, in the instructions below you will learn how to install it and add in a variety of Windows® shortcuts.

  1. Open your Internet browser and into any Internet search engine (e.g., www.google.com, www.inbox.com, www.bing.com, www.ask.com, etc.) type the string “WinKey 2.8” or download it from from Softpedia.
  2. Locate the downloaded file on your computer and run the installer (double-click on the file). If your operating system asks you for confirmation, click on the “Run” button.
  3. In the confirmation window click on the “Yes” button. The installation wizard will start automatically.
  4. In the “Software License Agreement” read the terms and click on the “Yes” button, then click on the “Next” button.
  5. Choose the installation path or leave it as the default. Click on the “Next” button.
  6. When the process finishes, the application will automatically launch. You can see the predefined shortcuts.
  7. To add your own shortcut, click on the “Add” button. A new dialog box will open.
  8. Click on one of the icons next to “Command” and you will see the first one is to open files and second one is for folders.
  9. From the “Shortcut key,” choose a combination of keys.
  10. For a simple command, that is all you need to create a keyboard shortcut add-on. Click on the “OK” button and close the application.

Tips and tricks:

  • You can remove or modify any custom keyboard shortcut add-on. Choose the desired shortcut from the list and click on the “Remove” or “Properties” button.
  • The installation wizard is set to always run the program automatically at the startup of the system. This is indicated by an icon in the system tray. If you do not want to display it, open the “Options” menu and uncheck “Show Taskbar Icon”.
  • If you want to know standard Windows® shortcuts, click the “Help” menu and click on the “Standard Shortcut List” item.
