trick that adds a shut down button to your desktop

The latest version of Microsoft Windows® offers a slightly different way to control your computer. The original Windows® 8 doesn’t have a classic start menu so many users have installed a third party application to add start  to their systems (read the article on giving your Windows® 8 a Traditional Style Start Menu for Free) or learned how to control their computer without it.

If you are still struggling with navigating through Windows® 8 and want a fast accessible way to shut down your computer, there is a trick that adds a shut down button to your desktop as a metro tile.

Creating a “shut down” shortcut in Windows® 8:

  1. Switch on the desktop interface, right click on the desktop and select “New > Shortcut“.
  2. Write “shutdown /s /t 0” into the location box. Click on the “Next” and then “Finish” buttons.
  3. Right click on the created shortcut and select “Properties”.
  4. Click on the “Change Icon…” button in the “Shortcut” tab. Click on the “OK” button in the displayed popup window.
  5. Select the icon you would like for the “turn off” button and click on the “OK” button.
  6. Close the properties by clicking on the “OK” button.
  7. To place it on the metro start menu, right click on the shortcut and select “Pin to Start”.
  8. Now, when you press the win key and go to the Metro start menu, you can simply click on the shutdown tile and turn your computer off.
