How Do I Detect Dead Pixels

How to download and run Dead Pixel Buddy© free application

Lower quality LCD screens often have dead pixels. Before buying a new LCD screen, examine it closely (if possible) to ensure that it does not contain any dead pixels. Sometimes, the seller may allow you to test the monitor in the shop or at home for a short period of time. If this is the case, you may wish to use the Dead Pixel Buddy©, a small, free and extremely useful utility that you can store on a flash drive or CD/DVD. The instructions below describe how to download and run this free application to help ensure your monitor display is dead pixel free!

  1. First, download the application, perhaps from Softpedia®.
  2. Click on the “Softpedia Mirror (US)” and download the zip file.
  3. Locate the downloaded file. Unzip it, and run the application.
  4. Now, you can fill your display with each of the six colors by pressing the “1 - 6” number keys on your numeric keypad. By pressing “0” you will start an automatic time cycle of all the colors.
  5. Go through all of the colors and closely monitor the entire display. If you see any points (pixels) that display a different color than the others, something is wrong.
  6. Switch the color and monitor the spot again. If it remains the same color, the pixel is dead.

  • Some producers do not give a warranty on dead pixels, so be careful when buying.
