How Do I Set My Desktop Icons in Windows® 7 Like They Were in Windows XP®

The majority of Windows®-based computers sold nowadays are distributed with the Microsoft Windows® 7 operating system as this is the latest version. Users will notice several graphical user interface differences caused by integration of the Aero® skin feature. Many people favored the previous Windows XP® version of the operating system which had a different desktop appearance. The Windows® 7 desktop icons will look very different on a Windows XP® desktop, but by setting up the size and spacing of the desktop icons correctly in Windows® 7 you can transform them into icons like in Windows® XP. Learn how in the instructions below.

Instruction:

  1. Click on the Start button. Type “window color” in the search bar and press the “Enter” button.
  2. The “Window color and appearance” dialog box will pop up.
  3. From the “Item” dropdown menu choose “Icon” and change the size to 32.
  4. From the “Item” dropdown menu choose “Icon Spacing (Horizontal)” and change the size to 43.
  5. From the “Item” dropdown menu choose “Icon Spacing (Vertical)” and change the size to 43.
  6. Click the “OK” button. Your Windows® 7 desktop icons should now look just as they were in XP.

Tips and Tricks:

  • You can change the font and font size in the text describing your icons by changing the parameters in the “Window color and appearance” dialog box.
