The latest version of the Microsoft® operating system, Windows® 8, contains many features found in portable devices. Although quite useful, many computer users are unsure of how to interact with the user interface and control the operating system without the classic Windows® Start menu.

One of the basic commands many users are confused about is how to properly shut down their computer with the new Windows® 8 interface.  If you would rather work through the traditional Start menu, there are applications available that allow you to add this original Windows® feature to your computer desktop, such as Classic Start 8.

If you would like to learn how to shut down your computer with the Windows® 8 interface, follow the instructions below which describe several ways to correctly turn the computer off.

Ways of shutting down a computer in Windows® 8:

  1. Move the mouse cursor to the bottom right corner of the screen, click the “Settings icon”, then click the “Power button” and choose "Shut down" or "Restart".
  2. Hold down the “Win key” and press “I”, then click the “Power button” and choose "Shut down" or "Restart".
  3. Press “Ctrl+Alt+Del”, for instance, click the “Power button” in the bottom right-hand corner and you'll be presented with the same "Shut down" and "Restart" options.
