How Do I Store My Photos, Music, or Documents Online

September 20, 2011  |  Difficulty: Easy

How to back up and restore your photos, pictures, music and documents using Online Vault application

Every user has had worries about his personal or business files. These are often family photos, a music collection, security certificates or documents, personal information, or company documentation. All files like these are normally saved on your hard disk in your computer. Many people do not take losing them into account, but there are several ways local data can be quickly lost. These can be hardware issues, virus attack, blackout, operating system crash, or more common actions like overwriting or accidental deletion.

Thankfully, we are able to avoid these unpleasant situations by using an Internet storage service. Here, we can easily save our files and folders to a third party storage space. The files are accessible anywhere and anytime. They are also encrypted and virus protected during the uploading, so our information is thoroughly secured against theft or damage. Logically, access to the stored data should be through an installed application, so let’s demonstrate how a user friendly tool like Online Vault is acquired.

Instructions:

  1. Open your Internet browser. Go to the Online Vault website. In the middle of the Online Vault home page, you should see a yellow “Sign Up Now” button. Left click on it.
  2. On the “Sign Up” page, we can choose from two options; “Free Account” and “Premium Account”. The features page clearly describes the advantages of the premium account. Choose the type of account you prefer and check the appropriate box. Two of the most useful premium account features are a 30x larger storage capacity and a data mirroring feature (makes your data more secure).
  3. On the same page, fill in your full name, email, and password (for assurance, your password needs to be filled in twice). There are two more checkboxes, one is checked by default, the second contains links to the “Terms of Use” and “Privacy Policy.” Both should be read before ticking the second checkbox. Do this, and left click on the “Register Now” button.
If you have chosen a premium account you will need to fill in more, such as “Billing Information” and “Payment Method.” Then, left click your confirmation button, “Submit Order.”
  4. On the next page click the “Install Now” button. Also, there are steps on how to run an installation file.
  5. The Installer will start with the “License Agreement” page, please read the “Terms of Use and End User License Agreement.” Then click the “Agree & Continue” button.
  6. After your program is installed, your login page is displayed.  Fill in all necessary information (login and password) and click the “Next” button.
  7. After a successful login, you are asked to choose items for your first backup. The most common folders are chosen by default. Now, click on the “Next” button. Your initial backup should start and even after clicking the “Close” button, the process will continue in your tray.
  8. Congratulations! You have stored your data! Launch the application and switch between “Backup” and “Restore” tabs to manage your individual needs of data transfer.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Launch the Online Vault application and in the “Backup” tab click on the “Change Schedule” button. This enables you to perform backups at a specific time.
  • Launch the Online Vault application and in the “Backup” tab click on the “Change Backup Files” button. This enables you to add or remove folders and files for backup.

Warnings:

  • If you are restoring a document you are working on, make sure it will not overwrite the newer version with the older one. The application will ask you what to do, be careful what you choose.
