How Do I Turn Off AutoCorrect Entries in Word

November 12, 2012  |  Difficulty: Easy

AutoCorrect function in Microsoft® Word.

Microsoft® Word corrects your typos automatically if you set the language. Sometimes, you may type a term or phrase that Word doesn’t have in its dictionary. The AutoCorrect function usually substitutes it with the most similar word from its current word database. However, there are situations when you may need to keep the word exactly how you typed it, for example, “nick-names”.

The instructions below describe the process of how to turn off the AutoCorrect function for a specific term and prevent unnecessary text correction in Microsoft® Word.

Turning off the AutoCorrect Function:

  1. Type the word or phrase you want and press the space bar; AutoCorrect will change it.
  2. Hover the mouse over the changed word. A blue rectangle will appear below, click it.
  3. A lightning bolt dropdown menu will be displayed. Select the second option, “Stop Automatically correcting” “<STRING>”.
  4.  Your word or phrase will be underlined as an unknown word but the application won’t autocorrect the text anymore.
