Pet Friendly Lodging

August 07, 2008  |  Difficulty: Easy

Looking for lodging and tourist attractions that will welcome you and your pet?  According to the American Hotel and Motel Association, pet-friendly lodging accounts for about 20,000 of our nation’s hotels and motels, making traveling with your pet easier than it ever was before.  Search online to find pet-welcoming travel ideas, lodging, accessories and loads of information on life in the fast lane with your pet.

One of the most important items to research is to find lodging that will welcome your pets.  Each hotel has different rules and restrictions on type, size and number of pets they will accept.  Many hotels will charge an additional fee or “pet deposit”.  Sometimes the deposit will be returnable, sometimes it will not. Some hotels will let you leave your pet unattended in the room and others will not.  When it comes to booking pet friendly lodging, you can never ask too many questions. Make a list of your concerns and make sure you get the answers.  Pet-friendly hotels are proud to welcome pets and will easily provide you with a written brochure of the rules so you’ll know exactly what to expect when you arrive.

Once you’ve found a place to stay, be sure to follow those rules exactly. Always remember to show the utmost respect to a vacation property that welcomes pets by bringing everything you need to practice “pet etiquette”.  That means keeping your pet on a leash at all times as well as using a pooper scooper to clean up after your pet.  Pet etiquette also includes looking out for warning signs of pet stress, which includes excessive barking, scratching and clawing that may destroy the property and annoy other guests. Above all, you want to encourage pet-friendly resorts to keep it that way!
