Selecting a Camping Tent

July 29, 2008  |  Difficulty: Easy

In today’s society, tents are a must-have outdoor accessory. While they have been around for centuries, they certainly have evolved to create advanced living arrangements. Offered in dozens of styles and sizes, tents are great for activities such as camping and hiking. They not only can withstand the coldest weather, but they also are designed for warm summer nights. No matter where you are going, it seems that tents will lend a helping hand.

While some people prefer sleeping bags to tents, they do provide an abundance of comfort and security. Let’s face it – if we’re in the wilderness and trying to shut our eyes, the last thing we want to do is be attacked by wild animals. A tent is a great way to stay sheltered and protected. Before purchasing a tent, you should ask yourself who will be using the tent. Where will it be used and when will you use it? These simple questions will help you when selecting a camping tent.

By determining who will be using the tent, you can figure out how large it needs to be. This will keep your objective clear, especially since there are dozens of different types. It is important to note that tents are categorized by how many people it can sleep. These include one person, two person, four person, and even five person tents. Even if you are only planning on sleeping two people – you may want a tent for four or even five if you have a lot of equipment. After all, additional space will make sleeping luxurious and more accommodating.

When shopping for a tent, don’t be afraid to actually try it out. It is very difficult to figure out sizes just by staring at a tiny box. Therefore, you need to physically get in there and see how much room you have. Trust us – it’ll help your decision in the long run. The location of your camping trip may be another factor that you’ll want to consider. For example, if you were going to travel to a rain forest or a desert, you would obviously need a tent that is ventilated, water proof, UV protected, and able to withstand an array of weather conditions. On the other hand, if you are camping on a mountain, you will need something that protects against snow and wind.

While most tents are made out of nylon or polyester, there are others that use cotton, canvas, and even polyethylene. It all depends on where the tent will be used and what it is specifically designed for. Are you planning on camping and canoeing? You will certainly need a lightweight tent if you plan on using it in a number of different areas.

The most important question you should be asking yourself is, “when will this tent be used?” Every tent is designed for a specific season. Despite the fact that some tents can overlap with months, others specifically target the winter or summer seasons. If you are only planning on camping during the summer, a summer tent is a great purchase. However, if you decide on camping in the fall, winter, and spring, you will want to test out a three season tent. Even though people claim that a tent is a tent, it will decrease your comfort. The last thing you want to do is buy the wrong tent and suffer from your poor choices.

Far too often we pick up an item and immediately purchase it, without giving it much thought. After all, we crave spending money and enjoy when we have new belongings in our hands. While this is okay to do with simple products such as clothing and electronics, a tent is much different. In order to get your money’s worth, you have to do your research. Assess your needs, find out when you will be using it, and physically try it out. By abiding by all of these pre-purchasing tips, you will have a great time finding a tent.
